i2unifi handles Ubuntu, UniFi OS, and device firmware updates unless you prefer to run them yourself.
Who runs firmware updates?
i2unifi handles firmware updates for you by default — unless you tell us you prefer to manage them yourself in UniFi OS.
What i2unifi updates
| Layer | Managed by i2unifi |
|---|---|
| Ubuntu server | Host OS patches on your hosted VM |
| UniFi OS / controller application | Controller platform updates |
| Device firmware | Gateways, switches, and access points on your site |
We plan upgrades with backups and safe ordering — controller first, then gateway, switches, and APs — to reduce outage risk.
If you prefer to self-manage
Some customers want full control of the upgrade schedule. Tell support and you can approve updates yourself in UniFi OS → Devices → Updates. i2unifi still maintains the Ubuntu host server either way.
