Keep this handy when configuring firewalls or writing support tickets.

Common terms

Term Meaning
Site Logical container for devices/networks (one location or customer)
Adoption Pairing a device to your controller
Inform Device → controller check-in path
WLAN / WiFi Wireless network (SSID)
Network VLAN/subnet definition in UniFi
Port profile Switch port VLAN assignment template
STP Spanning Tree — loop prevention on switches
PoE / PoE+ Power over Ethernet for APs and phones
RSSI Signal strength (dBm) — closer to 0 is stronger
Band steering Push capable clients to 5 GHz / 6 GHz
USG / UDM / UXG UniFi gateway product lines
U6 / U7 WiFi 6 / WiFi 7 access point generations

Adoption & management (typical — verify for your UniFi version)

Devices must reach your controller URL and core services. Common requirements:

Port / Protocol Direction Purpose (typical)
TCP 8080 Device → Controller Inform / management (legacy path)
TCP 8443 Admin → Controller HTTPS UI (hosted i2unifi URL)
TCP 8883 Device → Controller Secure inform (common on cloud)
UDP 3478 Device ↔ STUN NAT traversal helper
TCP/UDP 53 DNS Resolve controller hostname

Important: Hosted i2unifi may use specific hostnames and TLS — use the URL from your Servers page. Do not block outbound HTTPS from devices to the internet.

Support ticket checklist

When opening a ticket, include:

  1. Site name and controller URL (i2unifi)
  2. Device model and firmware
  3. Gateway WAN IP type (public vs private)
  4. Screenshot of Topology or device list
  5. What changed before the issue started
